Exploring Peace and Time

Zusammen mit seinem amerikanischen Künstlerkollegen Mike Robillard hat Fred George eine Sonnenuhr für einen weitläufigen Raum mit einer Botschaft des Friedens und der Verständigung in fünf Sprachen und Blindenschrift entworfen, die von kleinen und großen Besuchern erkundet und geschätzt werden kann. Jede römische Ziffer der Sonnenuhr ist aus Stahl gefertigt und bietet eine bequeme Sitzgelegenheit zum Ausruhen und Entspannen. Philosophische Friedensbotschaften sind auf den Seiten jeder Zahl in Deutsch, Französisch, Englisch, Arabisch und Türkisch eingeprägt, wobei die Blindenschriftversionen jeweils darunter liegen. Unser Bild zeigt das Kunstwerk am Völklinger Platz, als Beispiel für mehrere mögliche Standorte. Schulklassen und andere Gruppen sind eingeladen, sich ein Bild davon zu machen, wie die Sonne unser Zeitverständnis im Laufe der Jahreszeiten bestimmt und wie durch diese Zeitperspektive der Gedanke des Friedens als allumfassende Zukunftstheorie erst richtig Sinn macht.

With his fellow American artist friend, Mike Robillard, Fred George has designed a sundial for a wide-open space with a message of peace and understanding in 5 languages and Braille to be explored and appreciated by visitors, young and old. Each Roman numeral of the sundial is made of steel and provides a comfortable seat for rest and relaxation. Philosophical messages of peace are embossed onto the sides of each number in German, French, English, Arabic and Turkish, with Braille versions of each one included underneath. Our image shows the artwork at the Völklinger Platz, as an example for several possible locations. School classes and other groups will be invited to come and gain an understanding how the sun defines our concept of time throughout the seasons, and how, through this perspective of time, the idea of peace as an all-embracing theory for the future makes perfect sense.
